CAPPELLA ROMANA CHOIR CONCERT
Its performances “like jeweled light
flooding the space” (Los Angeles Times), Cappella Romana is a
vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to combining passion with
scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of the
Christian East and West, with emphasis on early and contemporary
music. It was founded in 1991 by Alexander Lingas, founding
Artistic Director and its name refers to the medieval Greek
concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced
Rome and Western Europe, as well as the Byzantine Empire of
Constantinople ("New Rome") and its Slavic common wealth. Each
program in some way reflects the musical, cultural and spiritual
heritage of this ecumenical vision. Flexible in size according to the demands of the repertory,
Cappella Romana is one of the Pacific Northwest’s few
professional chamber vocal ensembles. It has a special
commitment to mastering the Slavic and Byzantine repertories in
their original languages, giving annual concerts in London
(Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Greek
Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia) New York (Metropolitan Museum
of Art), Canada, Ireland, Italy etc.
In Patmos 2011 Sacred Festival, the Choir will present a
repertoire from Medieval Constantinople and Renaissance Crete as
well as Byzantine chant with modern neo-classicism elements by
Michali Adamis, Fotis Despotopoulos and Panagiotis Zes.

First presentation to the public, of Babis Blazoudakis
synthesis
«Saint Minas: Facing the sea»
With the participation of the cantor Panagiotis Boutas.
Babis Blazoudakis notes :
"St. Minas, facing the Sea (Darkness) composition was born after
the encouragement of Mr. Alkis Baltas, in the summer of 2010,
when he asked me to compose a work especially for the Sacred
Music Festival of Patmos 2011. The synthesis begins and ends
with the sound of the sea, to me, it symbolizes the darkness
that surrounds us daily". For inspiration I turned to two sides:
The first was a poem in English by Annie Lekkas, translated into
Greek by Alexander Lekkas. The second came from a distant
journey to the small island of Fournous where I had as my guide,
a dear friend and colleague the vocalist Panagiotis Boutas, who
also participates in the concert, with his wonderful voice.
